REDWOOD CITY, CA. --- Tatay Ino welcomed his daughter Malen to the US when she immigrated in 1996, unaware that she had a secret from her past that she was hiding – Malen was secretly married back in 1977. Entering the US as “married” when one is petitioned by a parent as “single” has dire consequences. And true enough, Malen’s bright future in the US suddenly dimmed when she was taken into custody by immigration officers and brought to a detention center, after a “friend” reported her. She was detained for being a “married/single,” and eventually sent back to the Philippines, after her fraud waivers, motions and appeals were all denied.
Malen’s world crumbled, and Tatay Ino was deeply saddened. There was nothing for Malen back in the Philippines. She was depressed, cried, and drowned her sorrow with sleeping pills. She was, however, resolute in returning to America. She took matters into her own hands, and found a way back to the US through Canada. She eventually married a US citizen and suddenly life seemed to be going well, until her case was again denied due to her old fraud. She again found herself in removal/deportation. It was at this point that Tatay Ino and the rest of Malen’s family consulted with the Law Offices of Michael Gurfinkel. They were regular viewers of CITIZEN PINOY and knew that Atty. Gurfinkel was the one who could handle Malen’s case. He was their last hope. How could a person with so many denials, and deportations ever achieve the “American Dream”?
