This Sunday on CITIZEN PINOY – A Secret Marriage Leads to the Loss of Boyet’s Dream to Live in America!
Secret Marriage Resulted in Fraud Denial! BOYET CARREON (center) was plunged into despair and confusion when the US Embassy refused his visa as an “unmarried” son for “fraud” after they got a copy of his teen marriage contract, which was supposed to be “secret” (or not recorded). Tune in to see how his story unfolds when leading immigration attorney MICHAEL J. GURFINKEL (right) and broadcast personality GEL SANTOS-RELOS (left) bring you a brand-new episode of CITIZEN PINOY on Sunday, February 17th at 6:10 pm (PST) with a replay on Tuesday, at 11:20 pm (PST) on TFC. REDWOOD CITY, CA. --- On the next episode of CITIZEN PINOY --- 45-year old Boyet has not seen his siblings for more than 20 years. His dream of moving to the greener pastures of America was crushed when the US Embassy in Manila discovered his “secret marriage” when he was only 17 years old then refused his visa as a “single” child, and charged him with fraud – a potential lifetime ban.
It was 1979 when Boyet was “forced into” an early marriage by his girlfriend’s family. He was only 17 years old then. In 1981, Boyet’s US citizen mother petitioned him under the F-1 category (unmarried son of a US citizen). However, on the day of the interview, the US Embassy refused Boyet’s visa application because they got hold of a copy of his 1979 marriage certificate. Apparently, Boyet’s in-laws recorded the marriage certificate even though he thought it would remain a “secret” marriage. It was a dark period for Boyet. His dream of having a better life in the US, and to be able to bring his wife along with him, was shattered.
In 1989, Boyet’s mother filed another petition, this time, as a married son of a US citizen. After waiting for more than 15 years, Boyet was scheduled for another visa interview. But still, his teen marriage continued to haunt him, as fraud stays on a person’s record forever. Even with the new petition, his previous fraud must be cleared first. He needed to apply for, and be granted a waiver. Confused on how to obtain this waiver and worried that he might miss another opportunity for a better life in the U.S., again, Boyet then consulted with the Law Offices of Michael Gurfinkel. Find out about the rest of Boyet’s story and how, despite a secret marriage, he is able to dream again, when CITIZEN PINOY hosts – leading immigration attorney MICHAEL J.
