REDWOOD CITY, CA. --- Janina lived the “princess life” during her high school years back in Manila. Her parents migrated to the US earlier and they were regularly sending money back to their teenage daughter who used the money for parties and shopping. Janina was happy because she enjoyed material things in life. However, there remained a void, because her parents and older siblings were not around as she was growing up. Eventually, Janina took her studies for granted and just looked forward to partying and living it up.

In 1996, Janina was petitioned by her father as the unmarried daughter less than 21 years of age. Around that period, Janina got pregnant and gave birth to Gwen. Any minor child is automatically included in the F-2A/F-2B petition. And because Janina was a known “party girl,” her parents wanted to be able to bring her to the US right away. Luckily, unwed mother Janina and daughter Gwen qualified for V-visas (given to those with pending F-2A petitions). In 2001, Janina and Gwen were able to join Janina’s parents in the US.

As time passed, Janina became bored and restless. She could not get a steady job in the US yet because she still did not have her green card nor her work permit. And because her parents were not aware of immigration procedures, they were not able to immediately file Janina’s Adjustment of Status. This “ignorance” of the law could have grave consequences on Janina’s status. Janina was in a state of panic. She was blaming her parents. She had no direction in life. She still partied like crazy. And she was scared that when her V-visa expires, she would be staying in the US illegally. All these worries were driving Janina to the edge. The only thing that kept her grounded was her daughter Gwen. She wanted to be able to “fix” her life and focus on the care of her daughter. And just in time, she was able to find “deliverance” in the Law Offices of Michael Gurfinkel who was able to straighten out her papers, by getting her a work permit and then her life-saving green card.

Find out how the former “party girl” has mellowed down and is now enjoying a stable life and reaping the rewards of her struggles, to be able to provide a better life for her daughter Gwen – when your hosts attorney-of-last-hope MICHAEL J.
