REDWOOD CITY, CA. -- Grace Pangilinan found out the hard way that secrets reveal themselves in time. In 1987, she was petitioned by her father as “single.” That same year, however, she got married and had a baby. She never told the Embassy about her marriage. Because the marriage did not last, she assumed that she was again “single” due to her long separation from her husband. When the Embassy called Grace in 2001 for her interview, they already knew about her 1987 marriage contract. Instead of giving her a visa, she was charged with fraud and misrepresentation.

Grace’s mother, Connie, was truly heartbroken. It had been her fervent desire to be with her daughter and grandchildren. Grace nearly lost all hope, and could not even begin to imagine how she could provide for her daughters, if she could not immigrate to the U.S.

Hope came in the form of Regine Velasquez. On television, Connie saw how Regine’s infamous case of human smuggling was resolved with the expert handling of leading immigration attorney Michael J. Gurfinkel. The family sought the legal assistance and happily, Grace and her daughters were granted their immigrant visas in 2002. They are now living their American dream!
