REDWOOD CITY, CA. --- This week's episode of Citizen Pinoy features a love story with all the elements fit for a teleserye:   a pretty, but poor "bida" from the province; a mean "contrabida;" and a tall, dark and handsome "prince charming."   And like all fairy tales, this teaches an important lesson - on love and immigration.

Joy was brought by her aunt to New York City in 1998 as a "caregiver" with a tourist visa stamped on a passport under a different name.   Six months after she arrived in New York, Joy was already a TNT.   Her aunt kept her passport, made her work hard, and took half of her wages.   Pretty much like Cinderella suffering under the clutches of her evil stepmother!

One day, she met Benson on the subway.   By chance, two very different people, going about their lives amidst a very busy subway station, their eyes met, and something sparked.   Soon, they were dating and fell in love.   But love and life in America was not that simple.

In 2001, when Joy got her passport back from her aunt, she suddenly decided to return to Zamboanga southern province of the Philippines, to be with her family.   Benson followed the love of his life, met her family and asked for her hand in marriage and then, bring Joy back with him to New York.   Alas, it turned out that it was not that simple. One would think that wife of a U.S. citizen like Joy could easily fly back to live and work in the US.   But Joy is a different case since she had overstayed in the US and had previously entered the U.S. with an assumed name.   Joy and Benson faced so many trials and tribulations along the way, including the possibility of a lifetime ban.   They realized, however, that their love was not enough.   The much-needed support and advice of an immigration expert became the "turning point" so that their fairy tale romance could have a happy ending.
