MAKE YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION TO BE WITH YOUR FAMILY
by Michael J. Gurfinkel, Esq.
The year 2001 is coming to a close. At this time
of the year, people pause to recall what they have done the past
year and then resolve to do better in the coming year.
I am thankful for the fact that I had been blessed with another
successful year, personally and professionally. But what makes
me feel grateful as the year comes to a close is seeing families
who have been separated for so many years being reunited again,
or knowing that some people, who have lived in fear and anxiety
for many years, can now live peacefully and productively in the
United States. It's also gratifying to know that by helping people
with their immigration problems, I was able to give them hope,
and a reason to look forward to better days.
As another year comes to a close, we should all step back and
ask ourselves: Have we done our best to make our loved ones happy?
I know many clients who did their best to make their loved ones
happy. Their loved ones are now with them in America, enjoying
the realization of their dreams of pursuing better opportunities
with their family. Or, their loved ones are now enjoying fully
the benefits of living legally in the United States, such as being
able to enroll in a school of their choice, or work in a job befitting
their education, or just simply to obtain a driver's license.
By finally legalizing their status in America, or by petitioning
their family members, they have given one of the best gifts they
could ever give their loved ones this Holiday season - being reunited
as one family again and being able to pursue their American Dream
freely, without fear and anxiety.
To those who still have to spend Christmas away from their family,
wiping tears away after talking to family members via long distance
telephone, I hope you will finally resolve to do something this
coming year to legalize your status so that you, too, can bring
your family to America. To those who have green cards or are already
U.S. citizens, I hope you will finally resolve to petition your
family members, so that they can spend future Christmases together
with you in America.
By taking these first steps, your family members in the Philippines
will be happy with the hope that in the near future, they can
join you in the United States and pursue a better life together
as one family.
For my part, I resolve again to do even better to achieve my law
office's goals of "Bringing Families Together" and "Helping Make
the American Dream Come True". It is one New Year's resolution
that I have made very year and will continue to make in the coming
new years.
